Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard has caused a stir by naming his Arsenal teammate, Kai Havertz, as his ‘best friend in football’, snubbing his long-time friend and fellow Norwegian, Erling Haaland.
Ødegaard, who has enjoyed a successful career in football since making his professional debut at just 15 years old, has known Haaland for many years. The two players have developed a strong friendship after growing up together in Norway’s footballing ranks, with Ødegaard often speaking highly of Haaland in interviews, describing him as a “good friend” and “great guy.”
However, when asked recently to name his ‘best friend in football,’ Ødegaard opted for Havertz, the German midfielder who joined Arsenal in 2023 from Chelsea. Ødegaard stated: “I’ll probably say Kai (Havertz).”
This decision has attracted significant attention, as many fans expected Ødegaard to name Haaland given their close relationship. Ødegaard’s comment highlights the growing bond between him and Havertz, with the pair forming a key part of Arsenal’s midfield this season.
While Haaland has enjoyed success with Manchester City, Ødegaard’s choice of Havertz over his Norwegian counterpart comes at a time when Arsenal fans have been particularly vocal in their rivalry with City. Haaland, who has been dominant in front of goal in recent seasons, has faced difficulties against Arsenal’s defensive line, particularly against William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães.
Haaland’s comments earlier this season, where he told Mikel Arteta to “stay humble” after a 2-2 draw between the two sides, further fuelled the tension between him and Arsenal supporters. Additionally, Haaland’s recent form has come under scrutiny, with the striker scoring just two goals in his last seven appearances, despite an expected goals (xG) value of 7.92. City, as a team, have also struggled recently, suffering five consecutive defeats across all competitions, including a 4-0 loss to Tottenham.
Arsenal fans have taken to social media to mock Haaland, drawing attention to City’s recent slump and reminding the striker of his earlier comments about humility.
As for Ødegaard, his bond with Havertz seems to be one of mutual respect and understanding, a relationship that is strengthening as the two continue to play key roles in Arsenal’s ambitions this season.
