Man City provide update on striker Khadija Shaw after online racist & misogynistic abuse

Manchester City striker Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw has returned to training after withdrawing from the squad for last Thursday’s League Cup semi-final against Arsenal, following vile racist and misogynistic abuse online.

What Happened?

After City’s 4-3 defeat to Arsenal in the Women’s Super League last weekend, Shaw became the target of disgusting online abuse. The Jamaican star withdrew from the rematch in the League Cup semi-final for her mental well-being.

City still went on to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory, but Shaw’s absence raised serious concerns about the toll of online hate on players.

What Gareth Taylor Said

Speaking about Shaw’s situation, City boss Gareth Taylor confirmed that she is back in training and feeling better, but he also made it clear that such abuse has no place in football—or anywhere else.

“It’s really difficult to analyse. Who knows what goes on in that world? But when you’re affected by things like that, it’s really difficult. Bunny is back, she trained with the team, which is good. That’s it. We don’t want to give airtime to this really bad issue.”

Taylor also reaffirmed the club’s support for Shaw, making it clear that the entire team stands behind her.

City’s Strong Response

Manchester City publicly condemned the abuse earlier this week, describing it as “disgusting treatment”. The club has already shared the offensive content with the authorities and vowed to take action.

Shaw herself has chosen not to engage with the abusers, refusing to give them “oxygen”, as she focuses on her football and mental well-being.

What’s Next for Shaw?

With Shaw back in training, she is expected to be available for City’s FA Cup fifth-round clash against Leicester City on Sunday. Her return is a massive boost for the squad, as she remains one of the most lethal goal-scorers in the Women’s Super League.

While the fight against online abuse continues, City have made it clear: they stand with their players, and no amount of hate will break their unity.
