ICYMI: Could Man City land Jamal Musiala this summer? With Pep Guardiola’s new deal and City’s transfer ambitions, legendary German pundit Lothar Matthaus believes Musiala could be the next big signing. Could Bayern’s star midfielder make a Premier League switch? Well… here’s what Matthaus says and how Man City might pull off the ‘insane’ deal.
Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are reportedly ready to enter the race for Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala, with legendary German footballer Lothar Matthaus suggesting the 21-year-old midfielder could be a key target for the club’s future plans. Musiala’s current contract with Bayern runs until 2026, but with no renewal in sight, speculation about his next move continues to grow.
Speaking to SportBILD, Matthaus discussed how Guardiola’s contract extension until 2027 could be pivotal in attracting Musiala to the Etihad. Matthaus stated, “Pep wants to write the next era and needs fresh blood,” referencing City’s need to prepare for the eventual retirement of key midfielders such as Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan.
With City’s financial muscle, evidenced by their recent €91.5m (£77m) acquisition of Josko Gvardiol, Matthaus suggested that the club has the resources to pay “insane amounts” for Musiala if they truly enter the transfer battle.
Musiala, who has enjoyed an impressive career at Bayern since his early days in Chelsea’s youth setup, has accumulated 179 appearances for the club, netting 52 goals and providing 35 assists. Matthaus believes that if Guardiola and City pursue him, the midfielder could provide a long-term solution to their aging midfield core.
As the summer transfer window approaches, City’s pursuit of Musiala could be one of the most intriguing sagas of the market—especially if Bayern and Musiala fail to agree on a new deal before then.
