Just In: Manuel Akanji shares fresh update on his health from surgery room as he faces 10-week layoff
Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji has confirmed he has undergone successful surgery on his abductor injury, ruling him out for up to 10 weeks.
The Swiss international suffered the setback during City’s dramatic 3-2 loss to Real Madrid last week, forcing him off at halftime. Pep Guardiola later revealed the severity of the issue, stating Akanji had “broken” his abductor and would be sidelined for two months.
Despite the setback, Akanji remains positive. He shared a message on Instagram alongside a post-surgery photo, saying:
“Surgery went well. The journey back to recovery has begun. Thanks for all your get-well messages!”
City’s Defensive Dilemma
Akanji’s absence leaves Guardiola with limited options at right-back, especially after Kyle Walker’s loan move to AC Milan. Speaking last week, the City boss outlined his alternatives:
- Rico Lewis – Started at right-back against Newcastle, inverting into midfield.
- Matheus Nunes – Could be tested in a defensive role.
- Abdukodir Khusanov – Unproven but a potential emergency option.
Lewis struggled in the second half against Madrid, particularly against Vinicius Jr, raising questions about whether Guardiola will trust him in the return leg at the Bernabeu.
With City looking to overturn a 3-2 deficit in their Champions League second-leg clash and continue their Premier League title push, Akanji’s absence comes at a crucial time.
