How Matching Works on Facebook Dating

First Things First: How Matching Works on Facebook Dating – Facebook Dating is a feature within the main Facebook app. Once you’ve set up your profile, you’re shown potential matches based on your preferences, interests, and activity.

You can do one of two things:

  • “Like” someone by tapping the heart icon

  • Pass by tapping the “X” icon

If both of you like each other, that creates a match, and the chat window opens.

But once a match disappears—whether someone unmatched you or the chat is deleted—it gets a little trickier.

Can You Rematch on Facebook Dating?

Here’s the short answer: Yes, but it’s not guaranteed.

There is currently no official “rematch” button that lets you reconnect with someone you previously unmatched or lost a conversation with. But here are the situations where a rematch might happen:

1. If You Deleted the Chat by Mistake (But Didn’t Unmatch)

If you just cleared the conversation but didn’t unmatch, you’re still technically connected. You can find that person again under your matches and send a new message. Just scroll through your matches under the “Conversations” tab and reconnect.

2. If You Unmatched Someone or Got Unmatched

This is where it gets more difficult.

  • If you unmatched them: You will no longer see them, and they won’t see you.

  • If they unmatched you: Facebook Dating doesn’t notify you, but their profile will no longer appear to you again.

However, sometimes profiles may reappear in your feed if the unmatch happened early on and no blocking occurred. So keep swiping—you may get lucky.

3. If You Both Deleted and Recreated Your Profiles

Some users try this workaround: deleting their Facebook Dating profile (not your Facebook account—just the dating profile) and starting over. This resets your match list and, theoretically, might bring back past suggestions—including someone you want to rematch with.

But here’s the risk: You lose all previous matches and messages. So be cautious.

To do this:

  • Go to the Dating Settings tab

  • Tap “Delete Profile”

  • Then recreate your profile from scratch

If that person is still active and within your preference settings, you might cross paths again.

Pro Tips to Help You Rematch or Reconnect

If you’re really hoping to reconnect with someone, here are some gentle strategies:

  • Widen your preferences: Expand your age range or distance filters slightly. They may not have shown up before because your settings were too narrow.

  • Join groups or events they may be in: Facebook Dating pulls from your interests, groups, and events. If you remember something about their hobbies or interests, joining similar communities may help bring their profile back into rotation.

  • Use the “Secret Crush” feature: If the person is someone you know from your Facebook friends list or Instagram followers (and they also opted into Dating), you can add them as a Secret Crush. If they add you back, it’s a match.

What Not to Do

  • Don’t stalk or search for them outside the app if you don’t already have a friendship or connection on Facebook. Respect is key.

  • Don’t create multiple fake profiles in an attempt to find them again. It’s not only against Facebook’s terms but also emotionally unhealthy.

  • Don’t dwell too long on the loss. Sometimes connections don’t work out for reasons beyond your control—and something better might be right around the corner.

Second Chances Do Happen

Love is funny. Timing is everything, and sometimes people circle back when the moment is right.

Facebook Dating doesn’t make rematching easy, but it doesn’t make it impossible either. The best thing you can do is stay active, stay open, and trust that the right connections have a way of finding their way back—or being replaced with something even better.

You never know—while looking for that old spark, you might just stumble into a new flame.
