Manchester City’s turbulent season took another frustrating turn as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Everton on Boxing Day.
Following a narrow 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa the previous weekend, Pep Guardiola’s side now finds itself grappling with an alarming run of just one win in their last 13 matches across all competitions.
Naturally, the focus has shifted to the January transfer window as the club looks to reverse its fortunes.
Of course, this kind of form is uncharacteristic for Guardiola’s team, who have dominated the Premier League in recent years.
However, their struggles have left them trailing in the title race and facing a serious battle just to secure a top-four finish. Erling Haaland’s missed penalty against Everton only added to City’s woes, with Jordan Pickford making a crucial save to deny the Norwegian striker.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has suggested that Manchester City could be one of the most active clubs in the January transfer window.
Speaking in his GIVEMESPORT newsletter, Romano revealed that City are planning to strengthen in multiple areas.
“I see Man City making [two to three signings] in the January window,” Romano explained. “A new midfielder, probably a defender (could be full-back or center-back based on opportunities), and also a new offensive player if an opportunity arises. But for sure, they’ll be very busy.”
Certainly, City’s need for reinforcements is pressing. Their squad, though full of talent, has shown signs of vulnerability during this difficult run. A refreshed lineup could help Guardiola address some of the underlying issues that have derailed their season so far.
Looking ahead, City face another daunting challenge in the UEFA Champions League. Currently sitting in 22nd place with eight points, they remain just inside the top 24 spots required to progress.
However, a loss to Paris Saint-Germain on January 22 could see them crash out of the competition entirely, raising the stakes even further.
Obviously, Guardiola understands the stakes. He will be keen to avoid such an outcome, and the January transfer window offers a crucial opportunity to reshape the squad. Time will tell whether the changes will be enough to get City’s season back on track, but one thing is clear—something has to change.
