Just In: Man City learn record-breaking asking price for Kevin De Bruyne replacement

Manchester City’s long-term interest in Florian Wirtz has hit a major obstacle—his price tag. Reports from Germany suggest that Bayer Leverkusen will demand a club-record fee if City want to bring the highly-rated midfielder to the Etihad.

The 21-year-old has been in top form this season, delivering 15 goals and 12 assists in 34 appearances. Recognized as one of the best young playmakers in Europe, Wirtz is seen as a natural successor to Kevin De Bruyne, whose contract expires in 2025.

Leverkusen are trying to extend his current deal until 2028, and if that happens, a release clause of €125m (£104m) will reportedly come into effect from 2026.

However, if Wirtz refuses to extend, the German side will demand at least €150m (£125m) for his signature—surpassing City’s £100m record signing of Jack Grealish in 2021.

Pep Guardiola was reportedly keen on bringing Wirtz in January, but City may need to offload players before committing to such a massive fee, especially after spending £180m on signings last month.

With De Bruyne’s future uncertain, City will have a big decision to make. Do they break the bank for Wirtz, or look elsewhere for their next midfield maestro?
