Transfer talks: Possible shirt numbers for Man City latest signee Abdukodir Khusanov revealed

Manchester City are closing in on the signing of Abdukodir Khusanov, one of Europe’s brightest centre-back prospects, in a deal set to strengthen Pep Guardiola’s defensive options for the second half of the season. With the Premier League champions grappling with injuries and inconsistent form in their backline, the 20-year-old Uzbekistan international is a timely addition.

According to reports, the Lens defender is on the verge of completing his move to the Etihad in a €40 million deal, marking a historic moment as he becomes the first player from Uzbekistan to feature in the Premier League.

Khusanov’s arrival is part of a larger squad rebuild led by Txiki Begiristain, with input from Hugo Viana, as Manchester City plan for the future before Begiristain’s eventual departure.

While medical tests and media duties are being finalized, fans are speculating about the shirt number Khusanov will don in Manchester. His preferred No. 5, which he wears at Lens, is unavailable as it’s held by John Stones.

Similarly, his other go-to numbers—No. 25 and No. 3—are occupied by Manuel Akanji and Ruben Dias, respectively.

Interestingly, the only number from Khusanov’s past that remains available is No. 45, which he wore during his time at Energetik-BGU Minsk. This number carries nostalgic weight for City fans, as it was famously worn by Mario Balotelli during his iconic stint under Roberto Mancini.

Alternatively, other numbers up for grabs include 12, 13, 14, 15, 21, 22, and a selection between 34 and 46. Notably, No. 23 remains retired in honor of Marc-Vivien Foé, the late midfielder who tragically passed away while representing his country.

With a debut potentially on the horizon as early as next week, Khusanov’s arrival at the Etihad not only bolsters the team’s immediate defensive depth but also sparks curiosity over which number will adorn his shirt as he begins his Manchester City journey.
