Sergio Aguero names the only two teams who can stop Man City winning Champions League as Real Madrid snubbed

Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero has weighed in on the 2024/25 Champions League competition, naming Arsenal and Barcelona as the only two clubs capable of derailing City’s hopes of back-to-back titles. Surprisingly, Real Madrid, often seen as Europe’s Champions League juggernaut, didn’t make his shortlist.

Aguero’s Take on the New Format

Speaking to Stake, Aguero shared his thoughts on the revamped Champions League format, predicting surprises this season:

“This format could help smaller teams thrive and complicate things for bigger clubs to qualify,” he said. Despite this, Aguero considers Manchester City the frontrunners, with Arsenal and Barcelona as their main challengers.

Why Arsenal and Barcelona?

Arsenal: Led by former City assistant Mikel Arteta, the Gunners are in fine form, sitting comfortably in their group. They’ve never won the Champions League, but Arteta is eager to change that, stating, “Success at this level is to win it.”

Barcelona: Under Xavi’s management, Barca has been resurgent, and their captain, Raphinha, even hinted at a potential showdown with City in the final.

Aguero, who played briefly for Barca before his retirement, hopes his former team can go all the way alongside City.

City’s Champions League Reign

Though Manchester City struggled in some Premier League matches this season, Aguero isn’t concerned:

“It’s the same club we know, controlling games from start to finish,” he said. After finally lifting the trophy last season, Pep Guardiola’s men are still the team to beat.

A Final No One Expects?

Adding intrigue, Aguero teased that the final might feature two unexpected teams, keeping fans guessing about potential dark horses in the competition.

The Road Ahead

With Liverpool leading the group stage standings and Bayer Leverkusen emerging as a strong contender, the Champions League remains unpredictable.

However, Aguero’s vote of confidence in Arsenal and Barcelona sets the stage for exciting matchups as the tournament progresses.

Will Aguero’s predictions hold true, or will City dominate Europe again? Only time will tell.
