Liverpool could hijack ‘world-class’ Man City target; reliable journalist says Reds ‘looking’ at him

Liverpool could hijack Manchester City’s pursuit of Joshua Kimmich as the Bayern Munich star edges closer to becoming a free agent. The Reds have reportedly joined the race for the German international, who has yet to agree on a contract extension with his current club.

Reliable journalist Christian Falk has confirmed that Liverpool are “looking at” the midfielder, even as Manchester City remain serious contenders for his signature.

Kimmich, described as “world-class” by former Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann, could prove to be a key addition for either Premier League side in the upcoming transfer window.

Liverpool’s interest stems from their need for depth in midfield, particularly to preserve Ryan Gravenberch, who has emerged as a pivotal figure under Arne Slot. The Dutchman has silenced critics after a slow start at Anfield, securing a regular spot in the starting XI.

While Gravenberch has been a revelation, Liverpool’s recruitment team appears keen to find cover and competition for him.

Kimmich’s versatility is a major draw. Known primarily as a holding midfielder, he has also shown his capabilities at right-back. This dual skill set could address Liverpool’s concerns in midfield while providing an option should Real Madrid’s interest in Trent Alexander-Arnold materialize.

Despite Liverpool’s growing interest, Manchester City’s need for midfield reinforcements could complicate matters. Pep Guardiola’s side has struggled to replace Rodri’s influence when unavailable, making Kimmich an ideal candidate to fill the gap.

With Kimmich free to negotiate with overseas clubs since January 1, the battle for his signature is set to intensify.

Liverpool’s sporting director, Richard Hughes, and his Manchester City counterpart will be keeping a close eye on developments in the coming months as the German star’s future hangs in the balance.
